Job Description:
We are looking for a candidate that is engaged, enthusiastic, and committed to humane and compassionate care of animals. Animal Care Technicians clean, feed and water research animals housed in the Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE). This position is also charged with checking animals’ health status and completing daily work logs and health enrichment forms
Education and Experience

  • High School graduate required; with AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level preferred. Related experience working with animals preferred. Or equivalent combination of education/experience. Certification will be required within one year of employment. (Animal Care Technician, Grade 5)

  • High School graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred: AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or higher (LAT) level. Certification will be required within 1 year of employment. 10+ years’ experience working with animals in a research setting. (Senior Animal Care Technician, Grade 6)

  • Possess the ability to have meaningful and respectful two-way conversations.

  • The person in this position frequently communications with faculty who inquire about their research animals. Must be able to exchange accurate information verbally and in writing.

  • The ability to access and use email for communication and documentation.

  • Requires attendance/completion of all mandated safety training and adherence to the animal care occupational health and wellness policy.

  • Involves working with a wide variety of animals and learning about the housing and care needs of each species.

  • Requires the ability to adapt to changes that occur with short notice.

  • Frequently moves about campus to other CARE sites.

  • Frequently moves and operates heavy lab equipment such as autoclaves, washers, and biosafety cabinets.

  • Occasionally ascends and descends ladders and stairs.

  • Frequently will encounter loud machinery such as cage washers, autoclaves, bottler filler, and bedding dispenser.

  • Includes the potential for bites, scratches and exposure to animal allergens.

  • Includes many tasks that are performed repeatedly.

  • Requires the use of personal protective equipment, e.g. masks, shoe covers, eye protection, hair bonnets, and disposable coveralls as needed.

Background and education check required
