Description: Develops layouts for components and systems and selects material. Prepares design drawings, calculations, and bills of material from engineering documents associated with the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of various company’s distribution systems, and telecommunication systems. Performs complex design assignments within a specific engineering discipline. Performs tasks associated with a large project or a number of small projects. May lead a group and/or provide functional direction to other CAD designers and support staff. Provide information and makes recommendations having major impact to the project
Typical Responsibilities may include:

  • Prepares scaled work order maps using computer aided design software such as AutoCAD/ Map3d, Blue Beam, ArcMap.

  • Draws map(s) using the correct mapping symbols, call-outs, decals, proper tie downs, etc.

  • Implement Engineering redlines with accuracy and completeness prior to completing the drafting/drawing.

  • Completes engineering functions and calculations based on field information and redlines quality control / Engineering (i.e., cable pulling, voltage drop, flicker, utilizing station sheets, etc.).

  • Inputs pole loading information in software such as SPIDA, O’calc and Pole Foreman based on field information and provides possible resolution to structure.

  • Prepares joint utility use authorizations based on field information and redline from the Engineer.

  • Inputs customer, project, and billing information (i.e., completes construction prints, material takeoffs to associated utility standards).

  • Consult with Engineers and other personnel to prepare design drawings and modifications as required.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have two or more years of design/drafting experience utilizing AUTOCAD, or similar computer aided drafting software.

  • The employee will be required to regularly sit, talk or stand and be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Frequent use of computers and related equipment is required. Vision requirements include: close vision. Frequent travel to field locations via automobile will be necessary and exposure to outdoor conditions. Occasional evening and offsite meetings or involvement in storm duty, company, community or conferences is required. Travel and fielding which may result in overnight stays throughout the Southern Company service territory will be required.

  • Experience working with AutoDesk Utility Design (AUD) and Design Manager (DM) for preparation of work orders a Plus.


Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with drafting and design practices and related engineering practices.

  • Demonstrated experience reviewing rough sketches, drawing specifications, and creating conceptual drawings in computer aided design software.

  • Demonstrated experience finalizing engineering product drawings with critical dimensions, performance specifications, and quality specifications to be in compliance with design standards and procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting quality review on designs, checks for inaccuracies, omissions, or compliance issues and providing recommendations.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to integrate work across relevant areas, manage information, and provide exceptional service to internal and external customers.

  • Must demonstrate effective resource and project planning, decision making, results delivery, and the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation.

  • Must demonstrate strong ethics, influence and negotiation, interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Engineering field or two years in a technical school with emphasis in computer aided drafting (CAD), math, or engineering technology.

  • Working knowledge of the Southern Company (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi) Power Distribution engineering software tools like ARMS, JETS/JETS Scheduling tool, DETS, Pole Foreman, CYME and DISTGIS/ArcMap are highly desired and preferred (not required)

  • AutoCad, AutoDesk Software, and/or AutoCAD certificate.

  • Design/drafting in CAD for electric utility, electrical distribution design, engineering design, or construction work.

  • PLS Pole/PLS CADD experience a plus

  • Previous utility experience a plus
